Seattle Yarns – Trunk Show & Classes May 9 – 21, 2019

Hi All,

Kim, Ron & Victoria will be travelling to beautiful Seattle from May 9 – 21, 2019 to set up shop & teach a few things at Seattle Yarns – there’ll be a trunk show and Kim is teaching some classes – so online sales for those dates will be on hold until we’re back in the studio (a lot of our stock is going to be with us, so the website stock levels will be low anyway). If you do have a yarn order emergency, we might be able to poke Kelsey to help out in a pinch.

SAK/WD 9 Revamp: Photo/Synthesis

SAK/WD 9: Photo/Synthesis

After 8 years of running the Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club the same way every year, we. are. bored. This year, we want to shake things up. Way up. We want to be inspired, and we want you to be as well.

One photograph. Four dyers. Four colourways. One unique club.

How it works:

Before each shipment, we will call for photo submissions that will inspire the dyeing for that round of club. We will narrow down the photos submitted to 3 images and ask you, our club members, to vote for the one you would like us to interpret in the dye pots.

Each shipment will have four different unique colourways, each inspired by the winning photograph. All dyeing techniques, known and unknown, are up for grabs. Semi-solids and tonals. Variegated yarns and speckles. Who knows what our little brains will come up with (insert maniacal laughter HERE)!!

The details:

4 shipments per club year (2 shipments CaribouBaa and 2 shipments of Chameleon Sock). Each shipment, you will receive one of the four colourways that has been dyed. You will also receive notes from each dyer as to what inspired them to create the colourway as well as pattern suggestions for each colourway. At some point during the club year, you will also receive an exclusive project bag designed and created for the club.

Basic 1 skein membership: 1 skein per shipment (4 skeins per year + project bag)=$144 plus taxes and shipping

Basic 2 skein membership: 2 skeins per shipment (8 skeins per year + project bag)=$258 plus taxes and shipping

Add more skeins to your membership for $114 for each additional skein (4 skeins per year).

Will I be able to pick which dyer I receive yarn from? No.

Can I have all of my skeins be the same colourway or will they all be different? You can choose whether you are receiving skeins that are the same or different.

What if I don’t like my skein? You will be able to exchange your skein for another random skein of our choosing from the same shipment.

Will you still be offering mystery skeins? No.

Will the colourways be repeatable? Will I be able to order them? Yes. As a club member, you will be able to order any of the current or past SAK colours just like you normally would.

Will you be offering artisan swag? No. Instead, we are going to carry more accessories as regular stock on our website and in our shop, allowing you to pick and choose what you want for your collection. This will also allow us to highlight more artisans.

When are sign ups? Club sign ups will start Feb. 14th and run until Feb. 28, 2018.

If you have other questions or concerns about the club, please email us at with the subject line: Photo/Synthesis BEFORE signing up for the club.

We hope that you will join us for this new adventure….

Giftapalooza 2017!

It’s Giftapalooza time.

We’re heading into the darkest season of the year. Literally. Every day getting shorter until we’re left with feeling like we’re living in a cave. And then the light comes back. Every year.

Let me say that again: The Light. Comes. Back.

Every culture has some form of celebration that welcomes the light back. We see the end of the tunnel. We see hope. We see humanity again.

No group of people — and I mean none — shows this spirit more than the community of people that have gathered around our work. You are all the wands lit up and pointed towards the heavens. You are every star that struggles through clouds at this time of year. You, through the very act of knitting, show how to move forward, stitch by stitch, every day until you emerge with something beautiful.

That is the spirit of Giftapalooza. This year, because of what many of us have been through. Because of what we will all go through moving forwards. It is more important that ever. That spirit. Community. Reaching out to other humans and making connections.

It’s time to come back to the reason we started Giftapalooza, and the spirit that keeps it going year after year.

What is Giftapalooza?

Giftapalooza is our annual tradition of sharing the knitterly love:

Give a gift. Get a gift.

Sign up for the gift you wish to receive, throw your name in the hat and let us do the rest. You’ll be matched with 2 “partners” (one you will “send” to and one who will “send” to you), and in December, the season of stress and insanity, you’ll receive your chosen gift from your partner. Exactly the gift you want. But with a small element of surprise.

See? It’s not buying more yarn for YOU. It’s someone else buying it as a GIFT TO you. 😉 And in return, you are “sending” a gift to yet another person.

Order as much of each base as you like, choosing to have all skeins (in one base) in the same colour, or in different colours.

In Giftapalooza tradition, all colourways will be one-of-a-kind, non-repeatable colours. You will have some control over colour choices, but leave the rest to us and the dyepot magic.

What yarns???
Chameleon Sock
Merino Nylon Sock

What else?
This year we have some special books:

A Stash of One’s Own by Clara Parkes
Knitting Outside the Box by Bristol Ivy
Knit Mitts: Your Hand-y Guide to Knitting Mittens & Gloves by Kate Atherley
Knitting Comfortably by Carson Demers (Canadian Customers Only, Please)

All of these books have been recently published and are a valuable addition to your knitting library.

Giftapalooza is not about the yarn.
That’s right. We said it.

Never has been…never will be.

It’s about the amazing community of people we have gathered around us.

So this is what we do —
After sign-ups have closed, if you opt in, we’ll be pairing you with two other Giftapaloozers to encourage one of our favourite things about Indigodragonfly fans: community.

If you wish, send your downstream partner a holiday greeting of some kind. This can be as simple as a 2 sentence note, a photograph or favourite recipe. It can be as complicated as getting your toddler to put to paper his/her interpretation of the latest Star Wars epic. (No one is expected to spend money on this part…something simple from the heart, reaching out to another knitter at a stressful time of year is what we hope happens)

And a different person will be sending goodies to you. Spreading the love upstream and downstream, and connecting you with 2 other knitters. Please do take the time to do this small piece. I have it on very good authority that the 4 or 5 words you send off to your partner will carry them and support them for a very long time.

Surprise packages — give to a friend or a stranger…
(AKA “make Kim cry constantly for a month”)

Finally, the tradition we’ve come to love the most. We will also be taking nominations for “sooper sekrit anonymous surprise packages” to be sent to people who deserve a little extra something this year.

Know someone who could use a little extra love this year? Nominate them by emailing us at, subject line: Giftapalooza Nominee and tell us about them (why we should pick them, full name, mailing address, and favourite colour (s)). We will let you know if your nominee has been chosen. (Please note, Indigodragonfly staff and volunteers are not eligible for nominations. If there is a sheep beside their name in this forum, they are disqualified. For very good reasons.)

Want to spread even more love by sending a package? We will have a listing for sending gift packages as well. Choose the recipient or tell us to send to someone on our nomination list.

Sign ups start: November 16 at 2 pm Eastern
Sign ups end: November 30 at 11 pm Eastern (or when all spaces are filled)

Partner assignments and package shipments start in early December.

Update: Minden Flood Relief 2017

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give everyone an update on the funds raised for the Minden Flood Relief Donation. We are currently sitting at $3271.12. The donation will be going in on Friday, so if anyone wants to add a last minute monetary donation, you can do so by clicking here:

I spoke with Marilyn at the food bank this morning to touch base about their current activities. Along with their regular food bank clients, the Minden Food Bank offered free hot suppers to anyone affected by the floods along with all of the volunteers who were sandbagging, etc. until the state of emergency was lifted last Friday (the day of the sale). Today, she was busy making lunch for the Mennonite Disaster Relief team which is currently volunteering in the town doing all of the yucky clean up work.

Thank you to everyone who was able to donate and to everyone who helped spread the word, even if you weren’t able to donate yourselves. We sincerely appreciate it and I know the people of Minden do as well.

Minden Flood Relief 2017

Hi All,

In 2013, several communities in our county were unfortunately subjected to flooding as lakes and rivers north of us released their spring snow thaw/runoff, forcing many area families to evacuate their homes. The rebuilding process took months and cost several millions of dollars.

Although many improvements were made to the local watershed and houses, Mother Nature decided 2017 needed a repeat of 2013’s disaster.

Four years ago, in order to raise funds to help people put their homes and lives back together, we dyed a Special Edition yarn entitled Canoe Up To The Beer Store, (an activity one could actually do at the height of the flooding), and donated profits to the county’s Flood Relief campaign.

This time around, what we’ve decided to do instead of a special colourway is to have a One-day only Sale – Friday May 26, 2017 – of existing yarn stock, excluding Clubs and Kits, with 25% of the day’s sales going to the Minden Food Bank, a local charitable organization in the heart of the affected communities. (see linked News Release: HERE)

The Sale will be from 12:01 am eastern standard time to 11:59 pm e.s.t. on FRIDAY MAY 26, 2017. When ordering, use the coupon code minden2017 at checkout to apply the 25% discount. If you would prefer to make a straight donation, or add a monetary donation to your order, the donation button can be found here:

Some of the waterways have started to recede in the past few days, but we’re expecting an upcoming week with potential rain almost every day, plus the waterways north of us that flow through our area are still at dangerously high levels, so more flooding is a real threat.

The clean-up has just started, so we want to do our part for our community. We hope you can join us on May 26. The world could stand to have a few more helping hands these days.

For a further look at the flood issues in our community, you can check out the local newspaper’s website, the Minden Times: Minden Times

Thank you for your continued support of our business and our community.

Review: Knitting With Rainbows – Carol Feller

I can put away my wallet for just about anything but a good book.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be reviewing some of my favourite fall releases.

Gradient yarns are everywhere!  And we are spoiled with a myriad of choices…handpainted single skein gradients, cake dyed single skein gradients and mini skein sets like our own Tornadoz. Some colour shifts are subtle; some dramatic. We are seduced by the possibilities for the colours, but often paralyzed by choice.

This is where Knitting With Rainbows comes in. Carol Feller’s new book is a manual for breaking down what kind of gradient you have in your hands, and which techniques work best to show off the colour shifts to their best advantage.

Carol guides us through different types of gradients, how they’re constructed and then matches each one up with techniques that shows it off magically. A handy chart guides you through looking for techniques that work best with the gradient you have in your hands, while using patterns in the book as examples. Each chapter guides you expertly through a different technique, including “yarn management” tips that help you make the colours in your gradient flow smoothly through the entire project.

In fact, those tips alone are plenty. At this point in my knitting life, I am deeply attracted to books that teach me new things. Teach me techniques. Inspire me to be more creative. Just as a technique manual, this book will live with others that I reach for often.

But the patterns!

Stave Hat borrows its inspiration from the Bohus tradition. Combining texture and subtle shifts in a simple colour pattern with a dramatic effect.

Probys artfully combines a mini skein gradient with a slipped stitch pattern that uses the gradient to every inch of it’s advantage. Whether using a subtle gradient, or a set of colours cobbled from yarn scraps in your stash, these are a wonderful “go to” gift project.

Mardyke takes my breath away. Shifting the fabric on its axis, shifts the colours was well. I love the juxtaposition of the angles of the fabric/colour vs the lace. It keeps my eye moving and appreciating every inch.

Knitting With Rainbows is an excellent addition to your library and suitable gift for adventurous knitters of any level. Purchase directly from Carol on her website in both digital and print/digital formats, or Ravelry (digital only)

Victoria nice It is I, minion Victoria, once again hijacking the blog to let you know that sign-ups for the second series of Geek Club are coming soon! We’ve had so much fun with Geek Club this year playing homage to some of our favourite fandoms and we just can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for next year.

Geek Club is a celebration of all things geeky and is an infinitely affordable club. We have included extra options this year to help you customize your club experience including a swagless option (for geeks who prefer to keep their fandoms to yarn) and amazing exclusive Robot add-ons by the hilarious Erin Wilk.

Little known minion fact: Geek Club is one of the things that convinced me to apply for my job here at indigodragonfly. I figured that people who weren’t afraid to let their Geek flag fly would probably be pretty awesome to work for. I wasn’t wrong 🙂

So boot up your computers and hang onto your mouse. Geek Club sign ups begin Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 12 noon EST.

Scholarship Fund

For many years, Ron and I have wanted to start a scholarship fund. What we haven’t been sure of is how to focus it. Our local art college? Textile students in general? Nothing we thought of felt right.

Until a few months ago.

We have an amazing incredible community of people here. One of the things I’m proudest of is the community that has grown around our work and how every single time someone is in crisis or needs help or is simply having a really bad day, not one…not two…but MANY of you leap to your feet to help in every possible way you can.

Do you understand how amazing that is?

A few months ago, when one of our own told our community about an issue with funding for her son’s education…something he’d been counting on…I know that many of us took that to heart. Not OUR kid. Not after all he’s worked to accomplish. Not after all he’s overcome.

And that was the spark we needed. The moment I mentioned this to Ron, he said “scholarship fund” and I knew we were on the same page.

Since then we’ve started building some ideas that will grow into this thing that we hope will expand to help more than just this special kid and his amazing family. We hope that any of you who need it will be able to access it. We will have criteria (the student or a parent are a knitter; financial need; other stuff we will figure out as this idea grows) and an application, but for now, for this first year, we will be raising some funds to help R (Destiny’s son) get the best education he can.

There are so many times in this life when unexpected things happen. When you get angry about the unfairness of it all. And we? Were really really angry. Which means we needed to do something, no matter how small. We can’t turn back time. We can’t erase what’s happened. But we can do this. Make a strong positive step forward and let R know that we…not just Ron and I, but this whole community believes in him.

And more important than the money, is that. The people it represents. When he is tired and angry and frustrated and scared, we also want him to remember that no matter what, we…all of us…have his back.

Every year after Stained Fingers Dye Camp, we sell the dyed yarns that campers don’t want to take home, and give the profits to charity. From this moment on, we will instead put those funds aside for the scholarship fund. All campers have been in on this since June and have wholeheartedly agreed. Those yarns will go on sale on our website today (August 24) at noon Eastern here.

You will note that there is also a donation item on that page. This will stay up for anyone who would prefer to make a direct donation. All of those funds will go directly to R.

There will be more coming.

Here is where we start.
