Countdown to Frolic: 2 More Sleeps!

We’ve packed up the car and are heading to Toronto for the Knitter’s Frolic very soon.  Any orders emailed to us over the next few days, will be responded by next Wednesday, after we’ve had a chance to unpack and check inventory.

In our booth at Frolic (#34), we’re so thrilled that Anna Dalvi will be joining us, signing copies of her book, Shaping Shawls from Cooperative Press.  Anna will have lots of shawl samples for you to look at and patterns available, including La Toupie, a double knit, reversible shawl using 2 skeins of Merino Silk 4 ply Sock.

We also just picked up some hot-off-the-sewing-machine project and tool bags from Darby Bayly:

Better Together

Part of the fun of preparing for a show like the Knitter’s Frolic is to see the colours all lined up together.  Which inevitably leads to making little play-groups of colour yumminess.

I’ve been wanting to knit Color Affection for quite a long time now.  My first choice of colours, while pretty, just didn’t work.  So I’ve been looking for the perfect colour combination. Want to play along?

Click to embiggen and see the colour names.  All colours will be available at the Knitter’s Frolic this Saturday in a variety of bases.

New Spring Colours!

We’ve been experimenting and playing and have come up with a batch of new colours for Spring.

We will be bringing all of these, in a variety of bases, to the Knitter’s Frolic in Toronto this Saturday (April 28).  Including old favourites, and some new bases as well:  Superwash DK and Worsted in sweater amounts, Ultra MCN Sock (more cashmere!) and more.  Come visit us in Booth #34.

For those not able to get to the Frolic, we’ll be releasing these colours online very very soon!

Surprise, Knitty Style

In honour of Threnody, a new pattern by Heatherly Walker, Yarn Yenta published as part of Knitty’s Surprise today, here is a whole new crop of Polwarth Silk!

Threnody is knit using 1 skein, which at 775 yds in a big 250 g skein makes a nice generous size to wrap around yourself.

Email orders to: orders@indigodragonfly.ca to place all orders.  Let us know: 1)  what you would like to purchase, 2) where you live (state/province/country), and 3) whether you would like us to wind your yarn into cakes (charge of $1 per skein with proceeds going to our Otis Houndation).  A PayPal invoice will be mailed to you that includes airmail shipping (or surface mail if you’re in Ontario).  Please allow approx. 1 – 2 weeks for delivery in Canada, 1 – 3 weeks for deliveries to the United States, and 2 – 8 weeks for international shipping (and possibly a bit longer depending on where you are). For further information, see How to Order.

Stage Door Cardigan KAL

Due to an increased amount of interest in the pattern, we’re going to be hosting a Stage Door Cardigan Knitalong over here in the Indigodragonfly Ravelry Group.

Care to join us?  You can purchase the pattern Stage Door Cardigan” target=”_blank”>here.

We’ll be launching sign-ups this week, and cast-on to start on May 14 (although starting anytime between May 14 and June 1 would be absolutely fine).  We have some new sweater knitters joining us (this will be their first!) and some just wanting to become better sweater knitters.  So we’ll be reviewing and adding to the Sweater Knitting posts I started last Fall.

We’ll be custom dyeing yarn for anyone who wants their perfect combination of yarn + colour for this KAL.  Orders placed by 8 pm on Monday April 23 will be dyed this week and shipped the following week after we return from the Knitter’s Frolic in Toronto. Orders placed after that time will be dyed when we return next week. Email us at ordersATindigodragonfly.ca (replace “AT” with “@”) to order!

You can choose a colour from our colour chart or even ask us to dye something special for you. (We regret that “limited edition” colourways can not be repeated)

Yarn amounts per size:
Size 33″ bust – 1000 yds
37″ – 1250 yds
41″ – 1500 yds
45″ – 1750 yds
49″ – 2000 yds
53″ – 2250 yds

The original yarn used in the pattern is no longer available to us, so we’ve brought together some excellent alternatives for you to choose from:

*NEW*Superwash DK 260 yds per 115 g – $22 per skein
Superwash DK
100% superwash merino with a nice twist and solid stitch definition. Takes colour very deeply like our Merino Sock, so excellent for bright and dark colours.

Polwarth SilkPolwarth Silk  775 yds per 250 g – $60 per skein
(lots of photos on Ravelry of different colours)
This is a lovely, soft, drapey yarn, making a lightweight but warm sweater. As with all very soft yarns with a lighter twist, some find this yarn pills. Please don’t choose this yarn for this project if that concerns you.

*NEW*Merino Silk DK 230 yds per 100 g skein, 50/50 merino/silk – $29 per skein
(This is our Merino Silk 4 ply Sock in a DK weight. Click here for photos of the Sock version, dyeing in a variety of colours)

DK Organic Merino 225 yds per 100 g – $25 per skein
DK Organic Merino
Using the same wool as the 2 ply Organic Merino that was February’s Club yarn, this is a beautifully soft option. This is not superwash merino, but an ultrafine merino, so it takes colour very softly in comparison to superwash yarns

Making Pretty Pretty Colours For Cooperative Press!

Last month Cooperative Press announced their upcoming Sock/Mitt Club, featuring new designs by Andi Smith, Kate Atherley, Stephannie Tallent and Heather Ordover

This week, we’re proud to announce that we’ll be dyeing the yarn for it! A base not available in our regular line-up, and colours that will be exclusive to the Club for a year.  We’ve already started plotting with the designers, with much moustache twirling and bwahahahahaha-ing.  So you know this is going to be good.  😉

Ellenaversary

About this time a year ago, I woke up, checked my email as per my usual routine and noticed that there was a pingback from this blog post.

You know, as you grow as a small business, you develop customers.  Customers who challenge you to push yourself creatively.  Customers who make you laugh…and cry. (Usually the good way) Customers who become friends and are willing to drive a few hours to come to your house and help you slay a unicorn.

And then there’s Ellen, who has Tasmanian Deviled the heck out of our lives: whipped in, shaken things up and most days has us on that knife’s edge of terror and hysterical laughter.

She, however, seems to think she more resembles Wile E. Coyote.

For the love of wool, do not sell this woman an anvil.

Yarn Update: MCS Worsted

As promised, our latest yarn base (besides South Polwarth :)): MCS Worsted!

To purchase any of the above yarn, please send me an email at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca (replace AT with “@”, no spaces) indicating which colours(s) you would like, where you live and whether you want it shipped surface or air mail. First email request for each yarn/fibre secures it. I will send you a paypal invoice for the full amount plus shipping and ship the packages off within 3-5 days. Shipping charges to the US will start at $5.97 for surface mail and $7.61 for air mail. Canada Post doesn’t make shipping charges for Canadian or International packages easy, so I will send you a shipping quote for your order for your approval. Best attempts are made to photograph colours accurately, however colours do differ from monitor to monitor (I’ve checked). I’ve also described the colours…and hope that helps. Custom orders (including dyeing or overdyeing your own fibre or yarn) are always welcomed! Just email me with what you have in mind.

So…

…if you take the letters of Yailford’s Opal and mix them up, what popular phrase do you get??*

🙂

For being such good sports, if you commented on the blog post (or, you know, made an actual order) prior to this post, we’ll throw a little something in with your next order/club shipment! (We’re especially impressed by those of you who thought something might be up, but your yarnlust dictated that you shouldn’t hedge your bets…and commented anyway.)

Also, we wonder what Scottish Silk would feel like…

*in Canada, April Fools ends at noon (it’s noon in our part of Canada now…all attempts at trying to be inclusive of all of Canada have been thwarted)…if you pull an April Fools prank afternoon, you’re the April Fool. Very frustrating for a young Kim, who’s father was known for pulling pranks at 11:58 am, meaning all retaliation backfired.

New Yarn Base!

***If you are reading this without reading the next post entitled “So…”, you really need to read it first!***

A while back, we came out with the Polwarth Silk base. At 750 yards per 250 g skein, the Polwarth has turned out to be one of our better-selling bases and has been in great demand for larger projects such as sweaters due to the double-skein size. Lately, we have been inundated with requests for a new base with similar length and skein size, and so we went back to the Polwarth distributor for some suggestions. We got samples of several Sport/DK weights in the 250 g double-skein format, and came upon one in particular that is related to the Polwarth Silk but a bit out of our dyeing comfort zone and is, we think, really quite unique in its construction and knitting qualities.

We’ve been interested in late of working with South American wools and fibres, and we’ve decided to try a Chilean yarn known as South Polwarth. Our yarn distributor says the South Polwarth comes from the South-Central district of Chile, and the sheep are mainly bred on the Western slopes of the Andes Mountain range near the town of Chonchi. The South Polwarth is a blend of 10% Scottish Silk, 15% Linen and 75% Yailford’s Opal, a breed specific to the region that is a cross of Merino, Polwarth and South Shetland sheep, hence the name South Polwarth. The Yailford is named as such because it has a very heavy yet soft coat, and in direct light gives off an almost translucent effect, like that of an opal.

The South Polwarth has a unique quality amongst wool bases in that because of the angled clock-wise structure of the wool fibre and local methods used in spinning the yarn, it is ideal for left-handed knitters. The wool gets its unique sub-structure mostly by the sheep constantly walking up and down mountainous slopes, which causes an uneven gait in their step and adds a naturally-angled crimp in the wool. The uneven rocky ground also alternately compresses and contracts the wool, giving it a natural bouncy come-back, which acts almost like a nylon component, so the yarn is not only super-warm but extra strong.

At present, we don’t have any skeins dyed, but what we’ve decided to do for this base is that since we have only a small amount to start with (50 skeins), we’re going to start by  accepting pre-orders for custom dye lots as of 10 am e.s.t. today, and if the demand warrants it, we’ll roll out the South Polwarth on a commercial level in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, we do have about a dozen mini-skeins (approx. 150 yds each) dyed in both TARDIS and Captain Tightpants, so if there’s anyone out there who’d like to get one or two to try out for some small projects/swatches/examples, we’ll ship them out for free but its first come first get! Just leave us a quick word on the post comments (below) and we’ll get your shipping info separate by email or Ravelry – please don’t send any requests directly as we’re trying to keep this separate from the Orders page/email address.
